A multi-pigmented paint is a paint made with two or more pigments instead of just one.

Multi-pigmented describes a paint or color that contains two or more different pigments in the same formulation. Manufacturers combine pigments to achieve a specific hue, value, opacity, handling quality, or cost.
Compared to single-pigment paints, multi-pigmented paints often:
- produce more complex or muted colors straight from the tube;
- are generally less saturated (lower chroma) than an equivalent single-pigment color;
- can become muddier when mixed with many other colors because several pigments interact at once;
- are useful for convenience, allowing artists to use ready-made mixtures without having to mix them every time.
Many earth colors, convenience greens, skin tones, and specialty hues are intentionally formulated as multi-pigmented paints.
Examples
Example 1: A tube labeled PY150 + PR209 is a multi-pigmented paint because it contains two pigments. Example 2: An artist may choose single-pigment colors for cleaner color mixing but keep a few multi-pigmented paints for speed and convenience.
Context
The distinction between single-pigmented and multi-pigmented paints is important in color mixing. Artists who want maximum control over hue, chroma, and transparency often prefer single-pigment paints because they generally produce cleaner mixtures. Multi-pigmented paints, however, can save time by providing ready-made colors with predictable characteristics.
