Transparent definition

A transparent pigment allows light to pass through the paint layer, so the colors or surface underneath remain visible. Instead of covering the surface completely, it creates depth, luminosity, and optical color effects.

    Transparency depends on several factors, including:

    • Refractive index: pigments with less light scattering tend to appear more transparent.
    • Pigment concentration: a thinner application usually increases transparency.

    Transparent pigments are especially valued for glazing techniques, where thin layers of transparent color are applied over dried layers to create depth, optical mixing, and subtle variations of color.

    They are the opposite of opaque pigments, which strongly scatter and block light, hiding the layers beneath.

  • Quinacridone Magenta (PR122) is a highly transparent pigment known for its intense color and excellent glazing properties.

  • Phthalo Blue (PB15) is a very strong transparent pigment commonly used for deep mixtures and luminous washes.

  • Alizarin Crimson (PR83) is historically valued for its transparency and glazing qualities, although its lightfastness is lower than many modern alternatives.

In painting, transparency is a fundamental property that influences how colors behave when layered. Transparent pigments create optical effects because light travels through multiple layers before returning to the viewer’s eye.

Artists often use transparent colors to create:
