A dye is a colored substance that dissolves in a liquid and stains a material by soaking into it, rather than covering its surface like a pigment.

A dye is a soluble coloring agent that chemically or physically bonds with a material, giving it color by penetrating its fibers or structure. Unlike a pigment, a dye dissolves in its medium and does not remain as separate solid particles.
