Imprimatura
Plural: Imprimaturas (rare)
Imprimatura definition
An imprimatura is a thin, transparent or semi-transparent layer of paint applied over a primed surface before beginning a painting. It creates a unified base color, reduces the brightness of the white ground, and helps establish values and color harmony.
An imprimatura is usually made with an earth pigment such as raw sienna, and it is often diluted with turpentine.
- An imprimatura is a thin wash of diluted paint applied over a prepared painting surface, typically after the primer or ground has dried and before the main painting process begins. Its primary purpose is to tone the surface, eliminating the stark white of the canvas or panel and providing a middle value that makes judging lights, darks, and color relationships easier.
Depending on the artist’s method, the imprimatura may also:
- Create overall color harmony by establishing a dominant undertone.
- Influence the mood and atmosphere of the final painting.
- Speed up the painting process by reducing the need to cover a bright white ground.
- Allow small areas of the toned surface to remain visible, adding visual unity to the finished work.
Traditional oil painters often create an imprimatura using a transparent earth color such as Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, or Yellow Ochre, heavily diluted with solvent or painting medium.
